Virginia Fields Memorial Fund

A number of people have asked where they could make donations in Virginia's memory. Memorial funds have been established at the following non-profits, which also provided help to Virginia during her lifetime.

Assistance Dogs of the West

Diabetes alert dogs are a relatively new type of medical service dog, trained to alert people with diabetes to rising or falling blood glucose levels before blood sugars reach dangerous levels.

This can be life-saving, especially for people with diabetes who no longer feel the symptoms when their blood glucose levels drop. Sufficiently low blood glucose levels can quickly lead to mental impairment, coma, and even death.

Assistance Dogs of the West (ADW) is a 501(c)(3) organization that is developing a diabetes alert dog training program, but since training a service dog for this type of work requires an extended training period in which the trainer, dog, and owner must work together, at present ADW's reach is limited to clients who live in the Santa Fe area.

A fund in Virginia's memory has been established at ADW to develop additional qualified diabetes alert dog trainers in the Southern California area. This fund will assist certified dog trainers who are already working at non-profit assistance dog programs in Southern California to come to Santa Fe for advanced training in this area of specialization.

Priority will be given to Canine Support Teams, the Southern California non-profit organization that trained and provided Virginia's beloved service dog (and unofficial LACMA mascot) Paul, but all qualified organizations will be eligible to apply.
