Grantees who have received funds from the Foundation are eligible to reapply for an additional grant, although it should be understood that new applications may be given greater priority.
Acceptance of a grant by an applicant constitutes an agreement between the grantee and FAMSI. Thus grantees must comply with FAMSl’s stated expectations, and barring unforeseen emergencies, the grantee must meet all deadlines as proposed and agreed. To the extent that a grantee does not complete the project and/or does not comply with all stated agreements, the grantee shall be permanently ineligible for future grant monies from FAMSI.
To the extent that the approved project requires the use of a foreign language, applicants without proficiency in that language are ineligible.
The regulations and requirements of individual countries may affect viability of proposed research projects. Applicants must receive all permits and permissions from the appropriate agencies, and must comply with the country’s specifications and requirements.
Members of the Foundation Board of Directors, the Advisory Board, and their lineage descendants are ineligible for grants.
Grantee Selection Procedure
Selection of grantees is made by the combined FAMSI Board of Directors and the Advisory Board (comprising the Grant Selection Committee), which consist of specialists in the disciplines noted elsewhere. The Grant Selection Committee reviews all eligible applications and meets to select grantees. This evaluation process includes special attention to the recommendations made by those Selection Committee members who are particularly proficient in the project or discipline of the grant proposal.
The Grant Selection Committee is concerned with the applicant’s professional and/or academic qualifications, and with the estimated extent to which the candidate and project may help to achieve the Foundation’s goal to advance understanding of PreColumbian Mesoamerican cultures.
The Grant Selection Committee is interested in the relative ability of the grant applicant to organize and complete a research project, as well as the feasibility of the applicant’s plans for distribution and publication of her/his research results and report(s).
The ratio between the number of awards granted to scholars of given disciplines, geographical areas, and modern countries varies according to the suitability of the project and the applicant’s professional and/or academic qualifications and abilities to carry out the project.
