Introduction to the Dictionary

The following K'iche'-English dictionary was compiled by Allen J. Christenson while conducting field work in highland Maya linguistics and ethnography from 1978-1985. All of the entries were elicited through collaboration with native K'iche' speakers in the communities of Momostenango (as well as its dependent aldeas of Canquixaja, Nimsitu, and Panca) and Totonicapan (and its dependent aldeas of Nimasak and Cerro de Oro). The dictionary is unpublished and is offered to FAMSI as a tool for research.

NOTE:  We've found that it's faster and easier to view these documents if you download the individual files to your computer and open them locally. To download and save, right click on the file, choose "save as" from the menu, pick a location ( for example "My Documents" ) and click "Save".

Once the files have opened in Adobe Acrobat, you can search the document for word(s) by either selecting the binocular icon or by clicking edit (then find in the resulting menu) in the tool bar at the top of the page.
