The map is a di Ricci atlas that is from Ptolemy. However, it was re-editied by Alfono X in 1238 or so with 8,000 new cities and locations. On this map, the Red Sea (Mar Vermejo to Cortes) is switched around. If you want to see it, the paper I presented in U. Hawaii last year is on my web site.
(and on their archived UH site because the 2006 conference takes precedence.)
The book you all should translate is by de Rodeur (Montaballo), (de R is the translator I think. . . .I did it years ago. . .it took a year to write it out and another to translate it.
The book has been split up into different voyages, but they all went together at the same time. . . . and the monks in the Pinta got to land first. Not Columbus. and NOT Santo Domingo., not even close. to it. They ALL knew where they were going.
The message about CC first voyage is "hidden" in the water. . . . .Those 8,000 locations of Ptolemy were sent to Alfonso as payment for passages on ship fleeing the Inquisition.Abraham Zacuto is the one who tells where those refugees went.
The first log of CC is a mismash of info collected over 100 years, covering 1492-3.
I don't believe CC ever made it back to the Americas, in spite of the promos.
He is the one who probably took the Borgia Codex to the Pope, and then it was lost for a few centuries. Just like the 1414 map Noha . . .(Lost my notes temporarily).
Dea
Oh earliest map of the area in question is supposed to be %th century AD by a Greek monk. . . . however, he has Alfonso's corrected cities, etc.

Hello Dea
I would be interested to know the age and source of your map.
Every print source I have seen as well as the online ones all
say that Columbus discovered Hispaniola, in fact Santa Maria
ran aground off the coast of Hispaniola and they built Fort
Navidad in January 1493 to house the men left behind as a
result. There has been some archaeological evidence of the
fort discovered as well as the ongoing search for the wreak of the Santa Maria.
The Mariners' Museum has an article on Columbus and maps.
It can be found at;
http://www.mariner.org/educationalad/ageofex/columbus_1st.php
In addition the Catholic Encyclopedia has an article on Columbus that goes into some detail. It can be found online at;

>Strange, my map claims he never went to Hispanola, but instead to the Caribbean. The author Fuson translated CC log of his first voyage and it is a blithering patch job from 100 years late.
