Holding a wounded foe in order to be clubbed to death was part of magical
iconography. There are even examples of Egyptian soldiers buried near the king
at Deir el Bahari in Upper Egypt with bashed in skulls while other battle
wounds were not fatal. This scene, important in magical illustration, became a
standard depiction of the king dispatching an enemy, even if he had never
himself participated in a battle. By showing the king as victorious against
enemies of Egypt, he actually was indeed slaying these enemies in battle.
