[Aztlan] Maya human sacrifice facts?

What do we really know about human sacrifice among the Maya that does 
not come to us through the Spanish?

I've read Linda Schele's very convincing descriptions of self-mutilation 
by Maya kings, but these seem to have been very special events, recorded 
proudly on stone monuments.

In looking into sacrifice of prisoners and other unwilling victims, I 
don't find much /evidence/ among the many assertions that the Maya did 
torture and kill victims for religious reasons.

Any ideas?
