Hello Listeros. The following is a very sad message from Kathryn's brother:
I am sending this to you because I believe that you would want to know
about this situation and would be concerned. Possibly you received
this news already. Kathryn died last night in Palenque Mexico. She
evidently suffered a brain hemorrhage and passed quickly. She was 64.
She will be buried in the Hopkins family plot at a church in Virginia.
Details of the burial and a service in Louisiana are still undetermined
but expected to not happen for some time since she must be returned
from Mexico and the immediate family are so far away and in different
locations. I am departing in the morning to go to Mother's. Merry
will arrive there on the weekend. I will return on Monday and Merry
will stay with Mother. Mother is 89 and this must be the hardest thing
that a mother has to deal with. There are many family members living
near her and they are helping her now as they always do.

Kathryn and Nick were doing their typical career activities of taking
grad students into the Indian villages of Mexico to set them up to do
their grad work. They arrived in Mexico about five weeks ago on June
11 and were scheduled to return home next Wednesday. Kathryn was doing
what she loved. I had an email from her just a few days ago that was
very positive and she was proud that she was being given co-authorship
on a paper to be presented by a colleague. Also recently she had been
awarded a Fulbright fellowship to do field work in Guatemala beginning
in January of 2007. They had plans to rent a three-bedroom home in
Antigua so that there would be room for visits from family and friends
while they lived there for six months or more. I was looking forward
to a visit. I last saw Kathryn in March when she and Nick stayed with
me while they attended the Maya meetings at UT. We had talked on the
phone just before she left for Mexico and she sent me several emails
from Mexico. I sent her an email just this past Sunday night. I hope
she saw it. I will greatly miss her presence in my life.

Bud
