As a reminder, and for those not familiar, the Maya calendar does not run
simply on a 52 year cycle. Not to lend any credence to the end-of-the-world
fantasies, the cycle ending in 2012 or 2013 is a bit more monumental than
just a 52 year cycle. It is the end of the 13th baktun, the last ~400 year
period in an approximately 5100 year cycle.
It must be noted, however, that inscriptions record time long before and
long after the current 13 baktun cycle. The end of the 13th baktun is
clearly supposed to be a time of change and celebration, as with all cycle
ending dates, but it's not the end of the world.
