There are Maya images of individuals being carried. See K5847 and 6294 in
the Maya vase database.

Carrying people on one's back is a standard practice; I have seen it  
done in highland Chiapas (the carry-ee being an old woman).  You sit  
them in a chair and then lift the chair with a tumpline.  Stephens  
and Catherwood got carried because they weren't up to the steep  
climbs in the hot climate.
