Tameme, the Nahuat(l) loan to Spanish, also shows up in the US
Southeast, where De Soto's chroniclers used the term to describe
local porters, e.g., "the cacique gave him 400 tamemes, the Indians
that carry burdens." The influence of Mexico is also visible in the
fact that all the Spanish materials used in missionizing among the in
Timucua (north and central Florida) were printed by the same Mexico
City printer that did the Nahuatl materials, and the Florida
translations were said to be done "on the model of the Mexican ones."
