In Nahuatl the word for dog is: "chichi", in which both of the 
letters "i" are short.  In the word "Chi:chi:mecatl" both of the 
letters "i" are long [writing on the computer we use the sign "i:" to 
indicate long "i"].  This indicates that the two words are not 
related.  Under normal circumstances short "i" does not become 
long.  The only word that is related to Chi:chi:mecatl is the word 
"to suckle or nurse" which is "chi:chi:"

Consequently it would probably mean something more like "people who 
suckle, nurse"
