[Aztlan] Snakes in Cancún

Gang,
This discussion gives me pause, first because now I don't know what to
write as the meaning of Cancun in our guidebooks; perhaps the wimpy
"Golden Snake" definition is inaccurate but one that's probably more
appealing to first-time tourists than to have them think they're headed
for a "nest of snakes."
Secondly, Kim's email reminds me of how naive, but lucky, we've been;
hiking in the bush around remote cenotes and unexcavated ruins like
Indiana Jones wannabes. I've gone up the worst dirt paths seeking
ruined haciendas, wandered around the high grass, and climbed piles of
stones with abandon. The only snake I've seen was a two-meter long boa
run over in a road. Maybe some caution is indicated, or at least boots
instead of sandals.
Cheers,
Bruce & June Conord

Subject: [Aztlan] Re: Snakes near Cancún

   ¡Hola Listeros!

I have only been peripherally watching this particular
topic. I am hesitant to put my "two cents" in, since
the last time I did, I got about a million e-mails to
my personal address.....

What I wanted to say is, I'm not sure about the
translation of "Cancún", etc. But as far as actual
SNAKES go.......... I have worked a couple of times
in the deep jungle at Naranjal (near Ignacio Zaragoza,
about an hour out of Cancún). Do you have ANY idea
how many NAUYACAS I saw, let alone false coral and
treesnakes, etc.? The place is LITERALLY "crawling
with snakes". Taking that into consideration, is it
such a stretch?? And I see nothing demeaning about it
- - as a person who has worked extensively in the
jungle down there, I see it as just plain fact.

Folks, this is just food for thought. Please DO NOT
write to me personally about this particular topic, as
my e-mail is already full of letters I am behind on
answering. ;)

Best to all,

KIM
