DAS will hold our monthly meeting on Friday, September
8, at 8pm in Rm 153 of the Heroy Building on the SMU
Campus.
We are very pleased to have as our guest lecturer Dr.
David Freidel, University Distinguished Professor in
the SMU Department of Anthropology.
For the past several years, Dr. Freidel has been the
Co-Director of the Waka' Project. The Project is a
major archeological undertaking, attempting to combine
scientific research of the ancient Maya past of
Guatemala with conservation and development in an
effort to save a vital section of tropical rainforest
in the Department of Petén. It is part of an alliance
of government and non-government agencies trying to
halt a cycle of destruction in Guatemalas largest
national park, Laguna del Tigre.
Recent excavations have uncovered numerous new
structures, burials and hieroglyphic writing, all of
which add to the historical and cultural knowledge and
context of the ancient Maya city of Waka'.
The DAS meetings are open to the public and we welcome
all visitors.
Please visit the DAS website if you need further
information.
