This reminds me of a story recounted by Tony Hillerman --- An Aboriginal 
writer was asked if he objected to "Indian."  He  answered, "Well, it 
could be a lot worse. Good thing Columbus didn't think he had discovered 
Turkey. "  And someone else added, "Or the Virgin Islands."
