It hasn't been mention explicitly so far, but there are important examples
of American Indians using the term "Indian" as a uniting appellation. Think
of A.I.M. formed in 1968. Or more currently, the preference of many
Brazilian Indian groups for the term "Indian." This is a means of presenting
a unified, politically powerful demographic in opposition to the sometimes
harmful intentions of Brazilian National and industrial multinational
interests.
As Nick Hopkins mentioned, sometimes 'taking back' a word can be just as
powerful as its original pejorative use.

Reading the book 1491 the author uses the term Indian over and over, is this
correct? We all know this is a term given mistakenly and in some Native
American cultures it is an insult, growing up I heard over and over the term
Indios to mean stupid, inferior and lazy! Isnt it time to stop using the
word Indian? Mario Malo
