[Aztlan] Bajos and Sailing

In July, at the Simposio de Investigaciones Arqueologicas de Guatemala,
Cesar Castaneda gave a paper "Estudios botanicos en la Cuenca Mirador:
Nuevas Perspectivas del Desarrollo Natural del Cuerpo Floristico y su
Significado Cultural", in which he postulated that the huge bajos in the
Mirador Basin were lakes in ancient times. He showed evidence of how local
flora (like water hyacinths) had taken over the lakes, caused them to silt
up, and had substantially changed their economic benefits for the
communities surrounding the lakes. I don't know how to reach him, but
Cesar Castaneda's paper may be very helpful to you.
All the best,
Sue Glenn

> Hi All,
> Thanks for ll your help in realtion to trade routes I now have
lots of leads to look into. I have another question. I noticed that most
of the preclassic site that i have looked at so for have Bajos next to
them. Which are currently seasonal swamps. Tom Gidwitz has a website where
he postulates that they used to be perennial lakes. That they bacame
seasonal swamps between 100-200 ad. Is there any place i can find out more
information about these bajos. I would like to know wether it would have
been possible to sail on them and wether the Mayan had that type of
technology at that time period.
