I haven't had the fortune to study linguistics as of yet, so any real attempt to decipher this is spinning my wheels, BUT the back of Stella C from Trez Zapotes (photo @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tres_Zapotes_Stela.C.back.Pt1.jpg) seems to offer some support for your vertical orientation.  One thing not mentioned is the similarities between glyphs 19/35 along with  8/41/62 and perhaps 5 comprising very simlar iconography to that found in the buried mosaic "jaguar masks"at La Venta ( upside down @ http://www.anthroarcheart.org/tblc38.htm and links 39,40,41 @ http://aal.ucsd.edu/reserves/vis126an/midterm/ )
