Regarding atlatl darts appearing as large arrows, I
have enclosed two photos I took about two years ago of
the famous battle scene mural at Cacaxtla,
Tlaxcala.  The first shows a victim  with a feather
shaft protruding from the abdomen.  The second shows a
warrior who appears to be holding the fletched dart in
the atlatl preparing to throw it (although it also 
looks like the battle was at close quarters and I'm
not sure how useful such a projectile weapon might be
under those conditions, and a number of thrusting
spears are also depicted, which would probably be more
appropriate weapons).
