Folks:
I believe what Martha was attempting to tell us, is that the skies in Hawaii are the same skies as those in the Americas (along the same ecliptical path naturally) But the ecliptical path in the skies do not stop in the Americas any more than it stopped in Hawaii.
One needs a broader view of ethnoastronomy than thought. Well-known astronomers and archaeoastronomers, as well as the Mayistas do a fantastic job of detailing our present day skies, but as Lloyd stated, there are those extraordinary events that are always recorded by tradition and lore that most are unaware of.
Charting language variations in one country will tell you only what is known in that country, but a different view of a singular event may have been detailed in another location far from our original sources. Care must be taken to make sure that the migration of that kind of information is in the correct direction or it will be (and often is) a mish-mash of dead-end material.
