Dear All,
I would suggest that there is some evidence for dog being connected with the
events that involve the other world.
For example, in all of the Maya scenes, which I believe are funerary, a dog
is seen accompanying the litter. See K594, 5534, 6317, and 7613 in the Maya
Vase Database. See also K6693 in Portfolio for a Colima reclinaro in the
form of a dog. Reclinaros are found in Colima shaft tombs, supposedly the
head of the deceased rests on these objects. Skeletons of dogs have been
found in burials as well.

Some have speculated that the 'dog' connection is there for the
same reason that a dog guards the approaches to the underworld
in Eurasia (Greek etc.), namely that dogs hang around the grave
of a master for a long time. That may or may not be a correct
explanation in this case.
