Folks:

i tend to agree with the Kerr's. The Ulua "death"
vase is desribed as being decorated with serpent
scrolls and having bat heads for handles.

The bat head motif is definitely a grave (tomb, here)
motif, of a body who has just gone to meet the
"Serpent" (motif) of the skies.

I might assume that the purpose may have been a bit
different than assumed. I would think if a man were
dying and had to be put on display for the "state,"
in order to prevent the stench of death, one important
thing would be to clear out the intestines as close to
the death throes as possible. Then with a few herbs or
incense, the body could be on display a few days
longer than normal.

Depends on if the body were "imperial" or "common"

The problem is that death has been removed from our
society. Now, it is all beautiful bodies in a chapel
filled with few tears and specific "viewing" times. A
long time ago, the body were in the living room and
anyone and everyone came by to pray or such.
