Dear Listeros,
While I take mild exception to Hube's comment that not
many people care about the modern Yucatec Maya, I do
think that Hube's reference to Paul Sullivan's works
is tremendously important.
For those interested in modern Maya prophesy or
historical legends, Paul's research is certainly
critical reading. I would also encourage any of you
to attend lectures by Dr. Sullivan, as they are always
engaging and highly informative. He's not an "ivory
tower" academic. Paul is a "salt of the earth" kind
of guy who has lived in some of the communities that
originally rebuffed all Europeans.
Paul's access to native knowledge (often gleaned
through befriending elderly Maya along the side of the
road as both Paul and his new friends are hitch-hiking
or gleaning for food) is exceptional for Quintana Roo.
This region is largely closed off to outsiders (at
least at the cultural anthropology level), and it
takes a strong researcher to abandon pre-conceptions
and to simply live, learn and listen to the stories.
