As you said Maud Makemson started her Katunob with 11 Ahau.
That is perhaps a logical interpretation of Diego de Landa's Relacion de las
Cosas de Yucatan, written around 1566. He illustrated his "Relacion" with a
katunwheel and marked it with a cross on Buluc (11) Ahau. As de Landa
reported: "The Indians say that the Spaniards finally reached the City of
Merida in the Year of Our Lord's Birth 1541, which is exactly the first year
of the era Buluc Ahau, which is in that block in which the cross stands."
The first katun however after the beginning of the Baktuncycle on 13.0.0.0.0
4 Ahau 8 Kumku is 13.1.0.0.0 2 Ahau 8 Mac.
It is therefore more logical to start the cycle of 13 katun with 2 Ahau.
But is the starting point well so important?
If Makemson started it with 11 Ahau, and Sharer with 8 Ahau, why not?
Of importance is the order how the katunnames cycle through the 13 daynames,
from 2, to 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1, 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4 Ahau.
Several of the Books of the Chilam Balam give an account of the history of
the Yucatan from the arrival of the Itzas to the time of the Conquest, and
record the katun dates of the events they recount. According to the Books
the Itzas settled in Chichen Itza in katun 4 Ahau. The "League of Mayapan"
was founded in the next katun 2 Ahau. Nearly a full cycle later of the
katunob, in katun 8 Ahau, Mayapan was destroyed.
Maybe Sharer used this katun to begin with.
