July 1st or 1 o'clock...What's the difference in nomenclature/concept?
The numbering of Katuns (all Maya time intervals) is in the nature of how
one counts time. We in our systemS of time reckoning use contradictory
naming nomenclatures but fortunately we do not intermingle them and thus
stay out of conflict. If we compare the differences in our meanings of July
1 with 1 o'clock we soon see the difference. In the former, we mean we are
in the first day of the month. In the latter we mean we have completed the
first hour of the day and are in the 2nd hour. The only time (NPI) a
problem comes about is when we switch the nomenclature. So why not do it as
the Maya did? 13.0.0.0.0 means that 13 Baktuns have been completed (i.e. we
are in the 0th Baktun or we/they have not yet completed a Baktun). And
likewise, 13.1.0.0.0 would mean that we/they have completed the first Katun
and are living in the second.
It is a shame that those who publish about Maya time did/do not always cite
the correlations used on LC date/Julian/Gregorian conversions and the type
of time measurements (elapsed or not elapsed) notations used in a proactive
manner to avoid future issues. It certainly would be be more responsible to
do this than spending time on wondering how to spell Pop or Pohp. But it
does look like the latter has moved as far north as even Mexico. There must
be a parallel between that and African Bee movements.
Happy holidays to all.
