Dear Mario,
While I cannot speak to canonical representations of
God M, I believe the caption is referring to
"pseudo-glyphs". These are often short collocations
(one or two glyph blocks repeated over and over along
the rims of many polychrome vases and plates) that
epigraphers agree have no linguistic meaning. Most
often, these are found along the periphery of the Maya
realm (such as El Salvador) where the Maya scribes may
not have been literate in the Classic Maya script -
yet wanted their works to imitate that style.
However, I have also seen plates from areas central to
the Maya region (such as central Quintana Roo) that
also have pseudo-glyphs along the rim. I would assume
that these are similarly from illiterate scribes, but
perhaps Justin can say more about this.
