[Aztlan] Portrayal of Mesoamericans through film...

Per Justin's note about the Tarzan films, I found an informe in INAH's Archivo Tecnico written by Jorge Acosta from the mid-1960s, when scenes from Tarzan and the Valley of Gold were filmed in Teotihuacan's Plaza of the Moon. Apparently the SEP in Mexico City had decided the script was denigrating to Mexico and so should not be allowed to shoot on location. In the informe Acosta wrote that he did in fact receive a telegram from the SEP telling him to stop the film shoot . . . but it was in the afternoon, and it was the last day of shooting. So, it was too late to make them stop!
One wonders how he would have evaded this in the age of email and cell phones.

I believe the "Chac" film being referred to here is "Chac: Dios de la
lluvia" (english title "Chac: The Rain God"), the 1975 film by Rolando
Klein. It's supposed to be shot largely in Tzotzil. Its IMDB entry may be
found here: http://imdb.com/title/tt0251629/
The 1935 film serial "The New Adventures of Tarzan" was filmed in Guatemala
with a plotline involving a lost Maya city and some shenanigans in
retrieving a "green goddess" totem from the inhabitants; it's in the Public
Domain and freely viewable online at the Internet archive:
