Last night at the Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University we
presented a panel discussion entitled "Apocalypto: Fact and Fantasy in
Mel Gibson's Maya World." Panelists were Patricio Balona, a Yukatek Maya
who is a reporter for the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Jeanne Simonelli,
an applied cultural anthropologist who works with Zapatista communities
in Chiapas, and me. If you ever want to do a public presentation on the
portrayal of Maya in Apocalypto or any other film, or on Maya in the
modern US, please contact Patricio. He is very articulate, fluent in
Yukatek, English, and Spanish, and media-savvy, having been a radio and
TV journalist in Belize before coming to the US ten years ago. You can
reach him at patricio.balona at news-jrnl.com or by calling 386-740-4413
(work) or 386-316-7556 (cell).
