Thanks for the article, Daniel.
Does anyone know if there are any similar references from the 16th century in the Andean region of South America? Most of the Andean colonial chronicles with which I am familiar only refer to the prominent "pockmarks" often seen on the indigenous survivors of the Andean epidemics. I have also seen some references to intensely high fevers, associated with disease, which often made their victims "delirious" and eventually killed them, but nothing about heavy bleeding, or blood gushing from the ears or nose.
This, to me, would be particularly telling because extensive mining was conducted in the Andean region as well, and the Andean region is also prone to extensive periods of drought.
Saludos a todos,
Margarita
