Aloha all
Can anyone help me on this - the mythical relationship(s) between Venus and the Sun in Mesoamerica?
I'm working on an old Hawaiian legend in which the sun-god, represented as Ka-onohi-o-ka-la (the eyeball of the sun), a personification of the creator god Kane, marries La-ie-i-ke-wai, then commits adultery with her twin sister La-ie-lohelohe. La-ie-i-ka-wai's father-in-law, Ka-onohi-o-ka-la's father Moanalihawaokele (a name which has multiple possible translations, including one that suggests he is one of the heavens), knowing his son has done wrong, said to her, "Return to your sister and live virgin until your death, and from this time forth your name shall be no longer called Laieikawai, but your name shall be 'The Woman of the Twilight,' and by this name shall all your kin bow down to you and you shall be like a god to them."
The Woman of the Twilight is Venus, and one of the other names of Venus is Ka-maka-nui-o-Kane - the-eye-large (important)-of-Kane.
There are countless similarities between Mesoamerican myth and Hawaiian, and I'm hoping you may know of myths that can shed further light on this Hawaiian one.
Thank you.
