[Aztlan] Maya creation date

Can someone tell me the reason why 3114 BCE was chosen as the creation 
of the current age for the Maya? Was there some significance in that 
date such as an astronomical calculation or was it somewhat arbitrary?

The reason I ask is because of the Indian and Sumerian flood myths which 
place the great deluge around or just prior to 3100 BCE. I know that the 
Maya believe that floods ended the ages and I am curious about the 
various correlations of flood myths around the world.
