Dear John,
It may be a coincidence but what you are looking at is the skirt of the
character we call the "snakelady". You can see this identical skirt on K719,
K1198, K2772 (where you have three versions of this ubiquitous woman who may
be a version of the moon goddess. You can check all of them by searching for
snakelady in the vase database.
However, whether this pattern has some relation to the Quiriqua emblem glyph
is another matter. We thought a one time that the pattern of the skirt was
representative of a leaf such as Canada's maple leaf. If that holds true,
then I suppose it is possible the designer of the Quiriqua emblem glyph used
the same leaf pattern for the emblem glyph. We should now turn to the
botanists to tell us if this pattern can be identified as a leaf of a
particular tree that would have been known in the area.
Justin

Subject: [Aztlan] FW: Quirigua Emblem Glyph on K3702?
Hello Folks -
I have been wondering for a long time if the emblem glyph of Quiriqua is the
object enclosed in the "cartouche" formed by the snake coil on the Maya
plate, K3702. Assume most of you know that to view it, go to Justin Kerr's
Vase data base at www.famsi.org and enter 3702 in the vase number section.
What you do think?
I have compared it with the EG of Quirigua seen in the studies by Matt
Looper, Andrea Stone and Joyce Marcus. Sure does look like it to me.
And is it created by the underside of the snake? Does not seem so. Well, I
guess it just could be that it is the bottom shell of a turtle, and the
snake is "choking" the turtle. There is a note in my wife's handwriting in
one of my books that says the EG of Quirigua is a stylized rendition of an
avocado - but she has no idea where she got the information.
RSVP,
John Drever
