Whether pertinent or not, it is possible the Seri Indians of the central
Sonoran coast believed that the earth was raised from the primordial
underworld on the back of a giant sea turtle (Pacific leatherback), and that
this turtle was regarded as creator of the Seri world. See William N.
Smith, "The Seri Indians and the Sea Turtles," Journal of Arizona History,
Vol. 15, no. 2 (Summer, 1974), pp. 139-158.
