Generally, most archaeologists keep a copy of "The
Ancient Maya" near their desks for quick reference.
The latest version (6th edition [2006], by Sharer and
Traxler) is a continuation of a tradition from 1946,
when Morley first published his volume attempting to
capture a little of everything about the ancient Maya.
Sharer, Robert J., and Loa P. Traxler
2006 The Ancient Maya (6th edition), Stanford
University Press.
Another, often overlooked introductory book is: "Lost
Kingdoms of the Maya" by Gene and George Stuart (1993)
National Geographic Society. This one is a wonderful
compilation of the knowledge drawn together by
National Geographic up to 1993 (so it's just a bit
dated), including their stunning photos by Ken Garrett
and a section on the Maya of today. If you can find
an original copy (rare) it will come with their
special map insert of Maya archaeological sites.
