[Aztlan] The Highlands vs. The Peten

I can't speak with authority regarding the Guatemalan
highlands, but the same distinction is often made
regarding the southern vs. northern lowlands. The
stela-altar complex is certainly more common in the
southern lowlands, but certain sites (such as Coba)
show that similar Peten traditions can be found
outside of their "heartland". I would not be at all
surprised if there are many sites in the highlands
that display associated stelae and altars. However,
the statement that these are more "rare" outside of
the southern lowlands sounds about right. I would
hazard a guess that a distributional analysis would
statistically support such an assertion.
