Merely as a very interesting example of the presence of stelae (and 
possible altars) at a highland site, see the recent work conducted by 
Barbara Arroyo at the site of Naranjo (not the well-known Classic site 
in the Peten) in the outskirts of modern-day Guatemala City, where many 
stelae have been found, at least one of which shows the vestiges of very 
shallow carving. The site has been dated to the middle to late 
Pre-Classic, if memory serves.
