Aztlan, Land of the Aztecs.
According to Duran,"lugar da la blancura", Place of Whiteness, lieu de la
blancheur.
Place of Herons.
Aztlan was the mythical point of departure of the Aztecs.
It happened in the year 1 Flint, according tot the Codex Boturini.
Aztlan was an island in a lake, probably Tenochtitlan in Central Mexico.
There must have been attempts to locate Aztlan somewhere in the Southwest,
just north of the Valley of Mexico, but probably without any result.
Further inquiry into Islands in Lake Patzcuaro and Mexcaltitan in a lagoon
along the Pacific cost of Nayarit may be useful?
According to the Aztec tradition, their ancestors departed from Aztlan and
went to Chicomoztoc, the "Seven Caves" at the beginning of their long
peregrination.
The word Aztec means "people of Aztlan". But strange enough they rarely
called themselves in such a term. It was in fact Humbold who invented this
term at the beginning of the 19th century. He used this term "Aztec" as a
reference to all the Nahuatl speakers in Central Mexico at the time of the
conquest.
And it was William Prescott who popularized the term in his book "Conquest
of Mexico" published in 1843.
In fact the Aztec called themselves rather as "Mexicas", or "Culhua-Mexicas"
of the old Toltec lineage in Culhuacan.
Some time ago I find this newsgroup "Aztlan" more accidentally, and I
thought that this group was exclusively for everything what could belong to
world of the Aztec.
But I was wrong.
So you see that nothing is, like it seems to be.
