August 15, 8:00-9:30 PM
Institute of Maya Studies Lecture
"Copán and Its Rulers"
Ever since John Lloyd Stephens and Frederic Catherwood first
described the beauty of Copán's monuments in their bestseller,
Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán,
archaeologists have come to Copán to study the wonders its Maya
inhabitants left behind. What you see today is the result of a
dynasty preoccupied with leaving behind a testament of its power.
In this lecture, we still strip away the layers of the city to review
what each ruler in that dynasty built, taking a special look at the
hidden corridors that expose so much of its history. In and out,
Copán is a true treasure among all of the Maya sites.
