I may be late in this discussion or are we still considering ' Hix ' as
another name for large cats, esp. jaguars? Is it the glottal stopped '
B'alam ' that is preferred form or ' Balam ' for the broader Maya language
family?
Re: Man-eating felines. While it may be uncommon, it is not unheard of to
have man-eaters in feline populations. Field Museum published on the Tsavo
lions in the early 20th c (popularized by Val Kilmer's film Ghost in the
Darkness). Many instances of large feline attacks have been reported in the
Americas and the Old World. No Masai would be without his spear and some
made sure that my archaeologist friends had a spear hand when working in
Kenya.
Heck, even my cat, Sam, will try to take a bite out of me if he thinks
dinner is late. A while back PBS did a special on housecat behavior
replicating large feline group behavior. Interesting that some things may
be inherent in the family\genus, let alone the species! (Which may make
sense when we consider some primate behavior!)

Why is it that everyone seems normal until you get to know them?
