At Sayil, there is a stela figure with an enormous, laboriously carved
phallus representing a fertility god or lineage head ? At Uxmal, a cluster
of severed looking ‘mushrooms’ can be found under a palapa near Casa de la
Vieja. Ruth Krochock gives detailed glyph examples of k’ul ah ton le wah ,
‘ he of the penis lineage’ titles, in her article, “ Women in the
Hieroglyphic Inscriptions at Chichen Itza ” (in Ancient Maya Women;Traci
Ardren, editor; AltaMira Press 2002). I’ve not seen at Chi Ch’en Itza such
blatant phalli as at Sayil and Uxmal, though the serpent head resembles a
phallus.

A few random thoughts,

Lorna
