At Sayil, there is a stela figure with an enormous, laboriously carved
phallus representing a fertility god or lineage head ? At Uxmal, a cluster
of severed looking mushrooms can be found under a palapa near Casa de la
Vieja. Ruth Krochock gives detailed glyph examples of kul ah ton le wah ,
he of the penis lineage titles, in her article, Women in the
Hieroglyphic Inscriptions at Chichen Itza (in Ancient Maya Women;Traci
Ardren, editor; AltaMira Press 2002). Ive not seen at Chi Chen Itza such
blatant phalli as at Sayil and Uxmal, though the serpent head resembles a
phallus.
A few random thoughts,
Lorna
