[Aztlan] MA: Phallic studies

Sorry, I have one more link for y'all...

For those not familiar with northern Maya phallic
monuments, if you visit my "Mesoamerican Photo
Archives" site, and click on the "Loltun Caves"
gallery, I have three images.

The first is the massive phallus located in front of
the entrance to Loltun caves (which originated at a
small site not far from Loltun).  It is at least 4-5
ft. tall.

The second is a small phallus from the "phallic
garden" at Uxmal (I have heard rumors that these
phalli were not orignially in this location, but were
collected there by archaeologists when the Queen of
England visited Uxmal, and they wanted to sanitize the
site -- not sure if this is true).

And the third is the phallic stela from Sayil
(mentioned by another listero in a previous post).

As for Chichen Itza, there certainly are stone phalli,
but the most interesting element is carved in
bas-relief in the great ballcourt, where it appears to
depict rituals associated with the large stone phalli
(Friedel et al. 1993, figure 8.32; see Ardren and
Hixson 2007, figure 22).
