Karon:
You have a lot of explanations, but the main concept was the cave of substanance. Not other worldly, but of this world. In Chamula the Sun ceremony is very clear in so much that the heat within the homes became unbearably hot, then the roofs (the plaza is laid out in a grid signifying roof tops and streets) started to burn from the heat above in the sky. The Monkey men then race through the plaza along the burning homes and up into the mountains where the caves are. They survived and returned to the burned town to start anew (cave of substenance). Thre Aztecs had seven caves for their temporary homes, while some of the Mixtec Codice show they emerged from under the ground. Native Americans say they climbed a ladder from under the ground. . . .and emerged in the sunlight.
Since everyone has basically the same tale, you should take them into consideration when you use the phrase for the quatrofoils "cave of substenance." It makes a lot more sense than "portal to the underworld." indicating that people had to die before emerging or entering the caves. The people that made it to the caves were the ones who survived.
