[Aztlan] mayan/hammock question

According to this author, the hammock is of Caribbean origin, and was 
introduced to the Yucatan by the Spanish. The term itself is probably 
from the Arawak for net, although there are other translations.

permanecido estática; desecha e inventa tradiciones perpetuamente y la 
tradición de dormir en hamaca es un ejemplo de tantos. Dormir en hamaca 
es una de las múltiples herencias que dejó la colonización española en 
la península de Yucatán. La hamaca, tan popular en las tierras del 
caminante del Mayab, no es prehispánica ni de origen maya; provino del 
Caribe, y su adopción por parte de la población maya propició una gran 
revolución en el diseño del espacio interior y la estructura de sus 
viviendas: el advenimiento de la vivienda maya típica tal como es conocida."
