Curiously enough, tthe Northern O'odham (i.e., Pimas and Papagos) of
northern Sonora and southern Arizona are known to have used hammocks in
their ramadas at least as early as the nineteenth century, and possibly
centuries before that. Hammocks were also used in some of the New Mexico
pueblos, such as at Cochiti. I seem to recall that Bill Sturtevent, a
cultural anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution, once worked on a
study of the distribution of hammocks in the New World. Whether he
published the results of his studies or not I don't recall. I'll e-mail him
with a query, and if the results are positive, let everyone know.
