[Aztlan] Maya or Mayan?

Listeros,
I am sure this question will engender a long discussion.
I have followed the practice (after Michael D. Coe) of using the word Mayan
when referring to Language and Maya when addressing everything else; people,
objects, sites, etc. However, I understand that most newspaper, book and
magazine editors who are editing lay material, use the word Mayan for
everything.
I is difficult to go against common practice and it seems in this day and
time that publication editors rather than professors rule the roost when it
comes to word usage.
