Regarding your respectful question: "Do the Maya people prefer to be
called Maya or Mayan and do they speak Maya or Mayan?"

My guess is that if you could somehow randomly select 100 people from
among the numerous ethnic groups (Q'anjob'al, Mam, K'iche', Mopan, etc.)
referred to as being Maya, the majority would not recognize either of
the two terms and would speak of their identity instead in terms of the
specific language they use (or used to use).
