I agree with Dave and Hube about general travel conditions and  
dangers, but I think they missed the point of the hotel robbery  
story.  Google "Eurostar Blue Resort Tulum" and read the reviews and  
comments.  The hotel rooms AND the safety deposit boxes in the rooms  
were looted by someone with master keys, i.e., with the collaboration  
of the hotel staff, and the manager then stiffed the victims,  
accusing them of forgetting where they left their money, being too  
drunk to know, etc., and they in turn were too intimidated to go to  
the police (picture the Tulum cops versus an international  
corporation...).  This hotel advertises itself as an ideal place for  
weddings and honeymoons, and the amount of loss was related to this  
being a large (70-80 person) wedding party, with jewelry, cash, and  
who knows what else in those safety deposit boxes--this was not just  
a bunch of people who were carrying too much cash and handling it  
carelessly.

There is no way that normal caution would have helped.  This hotel  
needs to be put out of business.
