I agree with Dave and Hube about general travel conditions and
dangers, but I think they missed the point of the hotel robbery
story. Google "Eurostar Blue Resort Tulum" and read the reviews and
comments. The hotel rooms AND the safety deposit boxes in the rooms
were looted by someone with master keys, i.e., with the collaboration
of the hotel staff, and the manager then stiffed the victims,
accusing them of forgetting where they left their money, being too
drunk to know, etc., and they in turn were too intimidated to go to
the police (picture the Tulum cops versus an international
corporation...). This hotel advertises itself as an ideal place for
weddings and honeymoons, and the amount of loss was related to this
being a large (70-80 person) wedding party, with jewelry, cash, and
who knows what else in those safety deposit boxes--this was not just
a bunch of people who were carrying too much cash and handling it
carelessly.
There is no way that normal caution would have helped. This hotel
needs to be put out of business.
