Listeros,

I carelessly clicked on "reply" instead of "reply all" and sent this
message to Holly.

   Here is a carbon copy:

Holly,

Dibble and Anderson's edition of the Florentine Codex (Book 11, p.
242) says in a footnote: Tezuatl: Miconia laevigata (L.) D.C.
(Standley, "Trees and Shrubs," Pt. 4, p.1068).

The FC paragraph on p. 242 says:

It is a shrub, which grows in the hot lands. This _tezhuatl_ is
converted into color. Cochineal is crushed; it is added to the
_tezhuatl_. It is provided with alum, with copperas. To purify it, it
is boiled. From it comes the dried color or a good colored water.
With it rabbit hair is tinted; with it there is tinting.
I use the _tezhuatl_ color. I dye something with dried color.

***

On the preceding page, they deal with Uitzquauitl (or Huitzcuahuitl).
The footnote: 1. Uitzquauitl: Caesalpinia echinata (Sahagun, Garibay
ed., Vol. IV, p. 367).

The paragraph points out that the word comes from _uitztli_ (thorn)
and _quauitl_ (tree), adding that it is a big tree. It, too, is used
for making dye.

Just in case you're not already using Louise C. Schoenhals, _a
Spanish-English Glossary of Mexican Flora and Fauna (Summer Institute
of Linguistics, 1988), it might be very useful to you. Although it
doesn't index Nahuatl words directly, the Spanish borrowings make most
of them easy to find.

Iztayohmeh,

Joe
