"The Maya and their Sacred Narratives:Text and Context of Maya  
Mythologies"
Presentations will cover the analysis of sacred texts and  
mythological epics, as well as their derived ritual actions. Some  
anticipated approaches include the reconstruction of mythologies, the  
interaction between sacred narratives and the socio-political spheres  
in general and kingship in particular, the study of paraphernalia,  
the physical layout of ritual locations, and the spacio-temporal  
perspective.
Keynote speakers will include Allen Christenson, Raphaël Gardiol and  
Philippe Borgeaud, Nikolai Grube, Simon Martin, Alain Monnier,  
Christian Prager, Karl Taube, and Fátima Tec Pool.
The Symposium will be preceded by a three-and-a-half-day long  
hieroglyphic workshop that will comprise several groups ranging from  
beginners to advanced level. All groups will be taught and supervised  
by experienced tutors. Tuition will be in available in English,  
Spanish and French. The workshop will include an opening lecture by  
Simon Martin.

"Cave, City and Eagle's Nest: An Interpretive Journey Through the  
Rediscovered Mexican Codex-Mapa de Cuauhtinchan"
Dr. Davíd Carrasco is the Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study  
of Latin America in the Divinity School, with a joint appointment in  
the Department of Anthropology, at Harvard University. Prof. Carrasco  
will present his work on a newly discovered Aztec map that can be  
read as a story, recounting the Aztec's journey to Mexico and their  
rise to the most powerful empire in Latin America at the time of  
Spanish contact. A dynamic speaker, Dr. Carrasco will make the map  
come alive and speak about one of the most important moments in the  
history of the Americas.
The talk is part of the Latin American Keywords Seminar and is co- 
sponsored by the Romance Languages, History, and English Departments  
and the Center for Native American Studies at the University of  
Pennsylvania.
