Institute of Maya Studies Lecture
“The Apalachee Indians of North Florida” with Juan Riera, B.A., M.A.
At the Institue of Maya Studies, affiliated with the Florida Science
Museum, 3280 Souh Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33129

In about 1100 AD, agriculture became important in the area that
became the Apalachee domain. This area was part of the Fort Walton
Culture, the Florida sub-culture of the Mississippian culture with
their capital as Anhaica. The Apalachee lived in Apalachee Province,
Florida until the tribe was largely destroyed and dispersed in the
18th century. They lived between the Aucilla River and Ochlockonee
River, at the head of Apalachee Bay, and were first encountered by
Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The Apalachee spoke a now-
extinct Muskogean language (Hitchiti), documented by letters written
in the Spanish Colonial period. Other Florida Indians regarded them
as being wealthy and fierce and the Appalachian Mountains were named
after them.
