Webster's dictionary describes the word "atlantes" as in architecture,
standing or kneeling figures or half figures of men, used in the place of
columns or pilasters to support an entablature.
>From the 1957 official Mexican guide book to Tula, p. 14, "Large sections of
carved pillars and of Atlantes of great size were found..."
p. 9 Archaeological research at Tula may be said to have begun when a
reconnaissance was carried out by a number of amateurs" the report which was
presented by a distinguished Mexican savant, Don Antonio García Cubas to the
Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadistica appeared in 1873. Charnay
excavated and published in 1885.

Subject: [Aztlan] Reason & Origin for name "Atlantean" Columns

Dear Listers

I was wondering if anyone can help me track down the origin of the term
"Atlantean" in reference to the columns at Tula. I am curious to find out
who first used it and their reason for doing so.

Thanks.

Helen
